You Can Have a Real, Actual, Working, Lightsaber. Yes, Really.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
When I was much younger, I used to think that a real, working lightsaber was the single best material object it could ever be possible to own, out of anything I could imagine. Even for some of my adulthood I would have still thought that, if I had imagined that such a thing could be possible.
And then, very recently, I realised that for Christians, it's much more possible than I'd ever thought.
In Ephesians 6, the Bible describes the "full armour of God". All of the items mentioned are defensive (in the sense of being armour, like a breastplate, or shield) — except for one item. The Bible — the word of God, is the sword of the Spirit.
The start of the book of John describes how the Word is God, and is the light. Psalm 119:105 also says that the Word is light.
Biblestudytools.com lists several other Bible verses that identify God, Jesus, and the Bible as light.
Our Battles are Spiritual
Ephesians 6 instructs us that our battles happen in the spiritual world:
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
The Sword of the Spirit
The Apostle Paul, continuing his letter to the Ephesians, then goes on to list the six items of armour that God has given us to fight these battles with. With only one of the items, the Word of God (i.e. the Bible) being a weapon of attack. Our sword.
Therefore, put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace;
above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
I'd been a Christian for several years before I realised that the Bible is, effectively, an actual sword of light. I like thinking of it this way.
So as Christians, the Bible is literally our "sword of light". That is, our light sword — i.e, our lightsaber. Which (unlike those seen in the popular movies) is real, and really, actually does work.
